Should "American" and "U.S.A." be listed on a foreign company's tool made outside of the United States?

Bought these three wrenches (featured above and below) several months ago. I wont mention the store's name. Saw these hanging on their wall and suspected right away that there was something odd about these.

"Hunter" sounds like it could be an older American brand name. I searched around online and, to make a long story short, it appears that there was a tool company called H. D. Hunter & Co in California according to patent records from 1948 and 1949.

There's also several other present day tool-related companies which use the word "Hunter" in, or related to, their brand names (some purportedly in the US (example: huntertoolscorp.com) and one which appears to be in Japan and made in Japan).

These 3 wrenches are specifically labeled as being Made in India:

When searching for more information on "Hunter American Tools" and "Hunter Tools U.S.A. Corp" most of what I found is traced to Panama.

I'm not able to spend much time on this topic. Intended to write about this months ago. Didn't have the time and barely have the time now. Just want to state that I don't like the idea of a foreign company which makes tools outside of the United States using the name "American" or "U.S.A" on their tools.

While most Americans would likely be able to ascertain right away (just by the look and feel of these wrenches) that these aren't American made I think it could mislead buyers in other countries. I don't like the precedent it sets either. Somewhat similar to using the word "bank" in a company name which is not a bank (which I believe is not legal to do, at least here in the US).

Information listed in the wrench labels are as follows (for anyone searching):

  • 22 mm wrench is ITEM No. HM-2207. UPC is 7453042835643
  • 21 mm wrench is ITEM No. HM-2206. UPC is 7453042835636
  • 20 mm wrench is ITEM No. HM-2205. UPC is 7453042835629

Languages used on the labels are English and Spanish. Note also the word 'spanner' is used instead of 'wrench.' Most, if not nearly all, Americans use the word wrench.
